Nahan

''The town of Nahan is situated on an isolated ridge in the Shiwalik hills, overlooking green fields. Nahan is a well laid-out Nahan Himachal Pradesh picturesque town, known for its cleanliness and dust free streets.
Saint and princes are linked with the origin of Nahan. The city was founded as a capital by Raja Karan Prakash in 1621. As per the another legend, a saint lived with a companion Nahar on the site where the Nahan palace now stands. ''

Nahan situated at an altitude of 932 meters, is a good base for visits to the surrounding areas viz. Renuka, Paonta Sahib, Trilokpur temple and the Suketi Fossil Park.

It has a pleasant climate throughout the year and is watered by man made lake and decorated with temples and gardens. It is the headquarter of Sirmaur district.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Nahan can be visited all round the year. Summer season starts in the month of March and lasts till June. Travellers can explore Nahan even during the autumn season as the weather remains pleasant for sightseeing activities and trekking. Winters are chilly and frosty.

PLACES AROUND NAHAN

Renuka Lake - Renukaji is the largest natural lake in Himachal. Shaped like the profile of a reclining woman, this is regarded as the embodiment of the goddess Renuka.

Dhaula Kuan - On the road to Paonta Sahib 20 km from Nahan, this is worthwhile stop which prides itself with a sprawling orchard of citrus plants and mangoes, and a fruit processing factory manufacturing various kinds of juices, jams, pickles.

Paonta Sahib - Paonta Sahib is a sacred town built in the memory of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs. The road passes through Sataun and

follows the Giri River along the beautiful scenery. Situated on the banks of Yamuna River, Paonta Sahib is a bustling township with growing industries.

Rajgarh valley - Popularly known as the Peach valley, Rajgarh is a lush green valley in Sirmaur district. Rajgarh is a place of great natural beauty and is about 40 km from Solan. One can camp and trek in the valley.

Churdhar - Dominating the entire landscape of fields, forests and ravines is the Churdhar peak, which rises to 3647 meters and is a trekkers’ treat from Nahan and Renuka. Approached by way of Dadahu, Sangrah, Bhawal, Gandhuri and Nauhra, it is a 50 km trek.

Nahan Fort - About 15 km from Nahan, on a spur above the Nahan-Dadahu Road, is this historic fort at Jaitak village. It was built by the Sirmour kings and reconstructed by Gurkha leader Ranzor Thapa, who fought one of the most important battles between the British and the Gurkhas here in 1810.

Jagannath TempleRaja Mahi Prakash constructed the ancient Jagannath Temple to house an idol he salvaged from Rajbans in 1671.

CLIMATE

The climate of Nahan is characterized by cold winters and pleasant summers. Summers during March to June are pretty enjoyable in Nahan with pleasant climate. Winters during December to February are extremely cold with minimum temperature falls subzero level. Snowfalls throughout winters are a spectacular characteristic of Nahan.

HOW TO REACH THERE

Air: The nearest airport is Chandigarh, with Dehradun as an option. Shimla Airport is also not too far.

Rail: The nearest railway stations are Barara, Ambala, Chandigarh and Kalka, which are connected by a regular bus service. Yamunanagar is another rail station close to the town.

Road: Nahan is approachable from many directions by road via Dehra Dun through Paonta Sahib, and via Solan from Shimla. There are regular bus services linking it to the other towns like Manali, Delhi and Haridwar.
